Petr Liška, a PhD student at the Institute of Physical Engineering, is spending the 2025/2026 academic year at Stanford University in California as a Fulbright Visiting Student. His research focuses on ultrathin materials, quantum optics, and photonics at the intersection of physics and nanotechnology.
Petr Liška, a PhD student at the Institute of Physical Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, BUT, is currently based at Stanford University in California, where he is conducting research in ultrathin materials and quantum optics thanks to the prestigious Fulbright scholarship.
In his personal blog reflection, he describes not only the cutting-edge scientific environment of one of the world’s most prestigious universities, but also the experience of living in the United States with his wife and young daughter. Alongside laboratory work and meetings with scientists from around the world, he reflects on the everyday life of a young family in California.
“Both Fulbright and Stanford have one incredible ability, and that is to connect people,” writes Petr Liška in his blog. According to him, the international environment, multidisciplinary collaboration, and openness of the people around him shape not only the scientific but also the personal dimension of the experience.
During his stay, Petr Liška has been collaborating with two research groups focused on optics, chemical engineering, and the development of light-emitting devices. He has also had the opportunity to attend numerous scientific events, lectures, and meetings with leading researchers from around the world.
In his text, he also reflects on ordinary moments of everyday life abroad — from travelling through American national parks to searching for a sense of home far away from the Czech Republic.
